Ditch Mom-shaming And Outsource Chores That Don’t Require Your Touch

We can all agree that mom-shaming is an utterly ridiculous practice. Excluding extreme examples, there isn’t one right way to be a mother. Nevertheless, when someone questions your ability to care for your loved ones, it’s difficult to avoid taking these criticisms to heart.

This should be our motto.

At a recent Working Moms Meet-Up, the cofounder of Chip Cookies, Sarah Wilson, spoke about a realization: being her best as a woman, wife, mom, and entrepreneur meant that she should only focus on the things that required her touch. As a result, she outsourced the activities and chores that didn’t. She created lists for each important role in her life. Her Entrepreneur list included things like grand openings, accounting, and baking.

And what was on the Mom list?

Laundry (no surprise there). Sarah’s talk resonated with many of the women in the room and seemed to drive home how important it is to be the best YOU.

The funny thing is, no one really bats an eye at outsourcing activities in a business. If you want to grow your business and focus on what matters to you, you ask for help from employees and contractors you trust. But if you’re a mother, it’s as if all of the work should only be done by you, regardless of how tedious or overwhelming it is.

The truth is, women have been taught that every part of maintaining a household is their “responsibility,” when it just isn’t true or sustainable.

So, let’s break down this illusionary wall of shame. Let’s outsource the activities we don’t need or want to do. Let’s be the best us for a change.
